It was an education to see the groups of people around Six Flags. For example, there were LOTS of pairs of kids seemingly without parents anywhere near. Kids as young as 7 or 8, from their size.
Mr W and I sat amazed. At first, we toyed with the idea of allowing #1 and #2 such freedom within a year or so, if the occassionn arose. Then I remembered my Senior Trip:
My sister is a year older, and the Dream Trip for Jerseyites schooling in the 80s was DisneyWorld, Florida. We had saved tons of our own money by the time my sister was ready to graduate, so somehow my parents allowed us to fly to Florida alone, rent a car, and spend a week at That Hallowed Ground.
We made it all the way to landing at the airport before we started fighting. Only my sister had a driver’s license, so I was stuck. We spent entire days standing in lines together, not speaking, too shy to speak to the people around us.
I did manage to sneak into a utility closet with a Jungle Boat employee and get kissed. (Excuse: bathroom break.) Then I RAN out to the line to find my sister. Disney was just too big- the thought of being separated from the only person I knew was too daunting.
Experience is a teacher. #1 and #2 wouldn’t do well alone together. Twice the work, but if Mr W and I can help it, they’ll have their own experiences with friends instead.
